What is it?

A USDOT number identifies your company with the Department of Transportation. Your inspections, crashes, and operation details are tracked under it.

Who needs it?

  • Trucks over 10,001 lbs that cross state lines
  • Hauling hazardous materials that require placards
  • Carrying passengers for pay (9+) or not for pay (16+)
  • In Texas, many intrastate carriers also need one for TxDMV registration

How we do it

  1. You give us your company and operation details.
  2. We prepare the application in FMCSA's system.
  3. The owner verifies their identity (we guide you by phone).
  4. You receive your USDOT number.

Documents

Have ready: ID, EIN, address, number of trucks and drivers, cargo type

PDF, photos, Word or Excel. Up to 10 files, 10 MB each. You can take a photo with your phone. If you don't have them now, we'll ask later.

What happens if it's not up to date?

  • FMCSA and state fines at roadside inspections.
  • You can be placed out of service until you get one.
  • Without a USDOT you can't get MC, UCR, IRP or TxDMV registration.

When you may not need it

  • Your vehicles weigh under 10,001 lbs and you don't haul hazmat or passengers
  • You only operate within a state that doesn't require it (Texas does for trucks over 26,000 lbs)

Not sure? Call us and we'll tell you at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take?

The number is usually issued the same day or within a few days, after the owner verifies their identity.

Is there a government fee for the USDOT?

No. FMCSA doesn't charge for a USDOT number. You only pay for our service.

Do I also need an MC?

Only if you'll haul other people's freight for pay across state lines. If so, it's best to get both together.
