What is it?
Operating authority (MC number) lets you haul other people's freight for pay across state lines. It becomes active once FMCSA receives your insurance and BOC-3.
Who needs it?
- For-hire carriers crossing state lines
- Brokers and freight forwarders
How we do it
- We apply for the authority with FMCSA (official fee separate).
- We file your BOC-3 if you need it.
- Your insurance company sends proof of insurance to FMCSA.
- After the waiting period, your MC becomes active.
Our fee
$150
+ $300 FMCSA fee
Before paying you see the full summary with official fees. You pay online by card, securely.
What happens if it's not up to date?
- You can be placed out of service at an inspection.
- Fines for operating without authority.
- Brokers and shippers won't give you loads without an active MC.
When you may not need it
- You only operate within one state (intrastate)
- You're a private carrier: you only move your own goods, not others' for pay
- You only haul exempt commodities (for example, some unprocessed agricultural products)
- You only operate within an exempt commercial zone

When can I start working?

What does FMCSA charge?
$300 for the authority. It's charged separately from our service and you'll see it in the summary before paying.
